Ophrys tenthredinifera
Ophrys tenthredinifera. These are orchids which resemble (in appearance and smell) the females of specific insect species. They say that there is an ophrys species for every insect one ;-) May 28th 2004

You are quick. I added a question under my vote but I think I know the answer. I bet orchids have something to do with it.

No you don't! I didn't even know there were orchids on Sardinia. And before I went there I didn't know I loved them so much ;-)

I was so quick because I was still working on the page...

You captured a rather exotic looking bit of flora. Are these orchids common in Sardinia? Thanks for looking at my columbine by the way.

Orchids are common upon the mountain plateaus of Sardinia (at around 3000 - 4000 ft). This particular one seems to be a bit more rare since I only found two specimen. But there were pictures in all of the guidebooks I used, so maybe not THAT rare.

If you are interested in more of the orchids, have a look at the Punta Ferulargiu page I put up last night. The orchid section gives you an indication what you can find there.
