Yeah, most don't let you get too close, but this one was busy eating (that fish in the picture had a head when I started taking pictures), and I also had a 300 mm lens with a 2X extender, effectively giving me 600 mm (hard to focus and steady, though, even with a tripod-- easy to get blurry shots). | | Posted Nov 20, 2006 11:54 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Nice pic. Where did you see this bird? I have seen many in Yellowstone, near the water of course. Does their range extend into the eastern states too?
For my digital SLR, the best zoom I have is a 75-300mm with a 2X. It's only really useful for shots in bright sunlight. I have used 2-2Xs together with the 75-300mm, for an effective 300-1200mm, and the image quality suffers immensely. But even with this, I have taken some decent direct shots of the setting sun, its elliptical shape almost filling the frame at 1200mm. | | Posted Feb 17, 2007 10:57 am |

Hasn't voted | This was in the rock-climbing haven of Everglades National Park, Florida. I only posted this because of the animal close-ups album and its liberal inclusiveness. Ospreys are pretty common in Eastern coastal areas now, but our mountains generally lack the lakes and large rivers that provide habitats for these great birds.
What you describe concerning your lens is pretty much what I had here. I'd never thought of using 2 extenders, though. I haven't used mine for several years now because it's just so hard to get a crisp shot using it. | | Posted Feb 17, 2007 1:40 pm |

We call it a FISH EAGLE.It retrieves trout from the lake! The last time I went to White Sands was back in October of 2005. Just LOVED every inch of it!!! Hasn't voted | Thanks for the comments. I love listening to and watching the ospreys wherever I see them. And yes, I love remote places, too. I get a kick out of all the threads and photos here for places like Mount Rainier and Mount Hood when there's so much spectacular, rugged, and virtually untouched wilderness all over the West. My favorite areas are the Absaroka Range in Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain Front in Montana.
