Ostarije pass (927m) is most important road pass over Velebit. It is placed around the middle of the massif and connects Lika region with coast of Velebit. In winter it is often closed because of heavy snowfall and especially dangerous is pass area because of often hurricane force Bura wind which builds several meters high drifts. This is how continental approach to the pass looks in winter. If you don't have winter tires it is obligatory to have chains ready in the trunk. Feb 25th 2005.
