Product Description

This book includes 300 flowering plants, trees and ferns from generally from high elevations from Canada to northern New Mexico. Its slightly misnamed since many of the plants occur in high elevations rather than true alpine habitats, though this is of minor importance. An introduction provides a discussion of alpine habitats and their distribution and general floral information. Species descriptions are grouped in the text section by family and color photos are provided in another section by flower color. This is a bit awkward because one has to flip back and forth between the text and the photos but such arrangement probably holds down cost and allows more species to be included. The descriptions are light including generally only a point or two about identification, distribution, sometimes similar species and other interesting bits of information about the species. The photos are generally beautiful as well as informative. The book isn’t close to a complete alpine flora guide, but for such a small, light book it contains a lot of good information.

From the Back Cover
This guide covers the alpine zone along the Rocky Mountain crest from the Canadian Rockies, south to northern New Mexico. The Rocky Mountain influence extends across the plateaus and ranges of Utah to the Ruby Mountains of northeastern Nevada and the San Francisco Peaks of northern Arizona. Worldwide, alpine floras are more homogeneous than in other life zones, with many species having circumboreal or circumpolar distributions. A relatively large number of species found in the Rockies will also be encountered in the Cascade Range of Washington, the Canadian arctic or even the Himalayas.
