This excellent source is written for west-central Montana for the area included in the Bitterroot River Basin from the high Bitterroots east to the Sapphire Mountains, though it is useful throughout much of western Montana and northern Rocky Mountains. Provided are excellent discussions of the physiological setting, geology, climate, floral breakdown, historical botanical exploration, instructions for use and a glossary. The key itself is of line key form and the excellent illustrations are taken from the Flora of the Pacific Northwest. Though it is a bit large for easy use in the field this comprehensive work is an essential component of anyone’s library who is interested in the regions flora.

This book is a product of the USDA Forest Service research system and is not very easy to find. Currently it is unavailable on amazon.com and other commercial outlets. Contacting the local Forest Service or BLM offices in western Montana or the bookstore at the University of Montana is probably the best way to currently find this locally popular book.

The area covered encompasses Ravalli County and southern Missoula County, and it includes the Bitterroot National Forest and portions of the Lolo National Forest. This guidebook uses a minimum of technical terminology and is intended for use by the public as well as by scientists, foresters, and educators. It may also serve as a model for compilation of similar information in other regions.
