Designed to be worn under a helmet or by itself. It is designed as an extra barrier against the elements but also so that it doesn't bunching up beneath a helmet like many other hats. The skull cap has lycra on top for breathability and fleece on the bottom to keep your brow and your ears sheltered. Simply the trimmest and smoothest helmet liner Black Diamond manufactures. For simplicity like the Model-T, it only comes in black, only size large, and weighs 2 ounces.

I purchased my skull cap helmet liner through the mail from mountain Gear. It is very nice and warm, and during my 5 days in the French Alps I often had to go with it stuffed in my jacket pocket because it kept me too warm. On the one really windy day that I really needed it, it was very nice. The only limitation is the single size. My ears were nice and toasty warm despite the bitter wind. If you need a helmet liner, this one is very good. It is very light and easily stored in your pocket when breaking a sweat on a hard ascent.

Pretty nice cap. Works well when you need a little bit of insulation, and it's not too cold or windy. Works well under a helmet. It only comes in one size which is medium, so it's useless if your head is big or small.

There is no Gore Windstopper in this cap, so don't even think about using it for alpine. The wind blows right through it.

This is definitely a nice solution for days when it's not too cold. It's nice and thin so it's really comfortable under your helmet. I found it to be comfortably warm on days in the teens, 20's and 30's. If it's much colder than that or windy, it's probably not going to be enough. I always bring a warmer balaclava for those days. Look for one made of the new 'WindPro' fabric.
