Pasterze, June 2014

Pasterze, June 2014

This is a pretty sad picture, if I remember how the big glacier of Pasterze looked like some 30 years ago. This winter was quite rich with snow, and despite that already in June the glacier has almost gone. Photo: Jasmina Pogačnik, June 22nd, 2014.

It was

the longest glacier in Eastern Alps, but now, I`m not sure.

Amazing,

When we were there just 10 years ago, it was much wider and longer, actually it looked more like it was in the 1920s, when my father took photos of it. None of the other large glaciers I have seen in the Alps had retreated that much.

death of a glacier

as no ice fills the basin from backwards any more the glacier tongue soon will be gone. Maybe a lake will replace it like at Trift glacier in Switzerland
