turnaround point  Sucess!

Took fifty minutes to get here from Lake Peak. That snow bridge on the ridge had to have been twenty feet high right where the summit area turns into a meadow. Great rock shelter on top though.

Beautiful Day  Sucess!

Came up from the ski parking area, up winsor trail to Ravens ridge, up lake, to Penitente. Backtracked to Tesuque, then came down the ski runs. Super windy today, otherwise perfect

Hiked up Lake Peak from Nambe Lake, then traversed over to Penitente. Headed down to Puerto Nambe and out the Windsor Trail. Nice day.

Good Company  Sucess!

Hiked up from the adjoining saddle with Lake Peak with a guy I met on the trail. He pointed out most of the landmarks we could see from the summit. The Truchas Peaks, Sheephead, Chimayosos, the Pecos Baldys, Jicarilla, Jicarita, Round Mountain, Hamilton Mesa, Elk Mountain, the Sandias, the Ortiz Mountains, the Manzanos, Gallinas, San Antonio Mountain, Chicoma, Polvadera, Georgia O'Keeffe's Cerro Pedernal. We speculated as to whether Sierra Blanca would be visible on a clearer day, but it was too hazy. We parted ways there, as I headed off toward Santa Fe Baldy, and he headed on the ridgeline to the south.

2nd Trip  Sucess!

Left Abq REI at 5:45 am with Jay and David. We got lost on the wrong road in Santa Fe but found the right one eventually. Started hiking at 8:20, summited Lake Peak at 9:50. We headed on over to Penitente, arriving at 10:30, before backtracking and heading down Raven's Ridge. Returned at 12:15. Friendly, fluffy clouds on this day. Tons of people out on the trails.

Great weather, snowshoes required for return trip  Sucess!

Came up over Lake and continued the loop to Penitente. Route finding over the ridge from Lake was a bit challenging, but once all the way down in the saddle zigzagging up the sun cupped and hardened snow went pretty quick. About an hour and a half from the top of Lake to Penitente. Sat on the summit for about 20 minutes watching a couple people look as if they wanted to cross from Deception to Lake, but were not sure of the ridge.
Continuing the loop I headed down towards Puerto Nambe, only to find that snowshoes would have been the best thing to have carried over Deception, Lake and Penitente. I spent about three hours route finding in waist deep snow that was hard and crusty enough in some areas to support my weight, and not in others. By the time I got back to the Windsor I was beat, and will still about 4-5 miles from the TH.
Made it back to the car at 18:00, in one piece. Weather was great all day, maybe a touch warm - which didn't help my snow situation.

Raven's Ridge  Sucess!

Hiked up to Lake Peak, beautiful views, and then hiked over to Penitente Peak. I did this whole hike car-to-car in 4.5 hours, and I thought I was doing way awesome until I saw a couple of guys running up the trail. I went back the same way down Raven's Ridge.

Yep this one too. A big, broad meadow, but nice anyway.

A Trip End Point  Sucess!

Another peak we often ate lunch on during llama trips into the Pecos Wilderness. We would leave from a camp at Puerto Nambe and make Penitente Peak our end point, never did go on over to Lake Peak.

part of loop  Sucess!

Date a guess. The loop from the ski area, over Lake Peak and Down Penitente, down Windsor trail, was a popular day hike.

Missed the lightening...  Sucess!

Decided to chance the ridge to Penitente Peak with dark clouds looming. 20 minutes later we were on the top and the clouds moved east. Fantastic views!

Lake Peak, Windsor Loop  Sucess!

Great loop! The aspens in Nambe drainage were looking very good, they'll be at their peak soon.

Route Climbed: Lake Peak/Windsor Trail Loop Date Climbed: August 17, 2005  Sucess!

I chose to make a run for the summit from Lake Peak when I discovered it was only 8:30 am and it would be a while before any storms could form. I made it over in 14 minutes and my legs nearly gave out while within 200 feet of the summit.

This turned out to be a short hike because of the time saved by returning via Tesuque. Nice day but breezy at the top.

Route Climbed: Lake Peak/Windsor Trail loop Date Climbed: June 2003  Sucess!

A very cool loop hike to do and Penitente's broad summit makes for a nice lunch spot, provided there's no storms around. Beware the large snowfield in the saddle between it and Lake Peak which tends to linger into the summer.

Route Climbed: Windsor/Skyline Trail Date Climbed: September 2003  Sucess!

Summited this peak, along with Lake and deception, on a nasty Sunday morning. Very high winds assaulted me on the summit, making it nearly impossible to walk a straight line over the bald peaks. Beware the ridges between Penetente, Lake, and Deception Peaks, as in high winds they may be very precarious. Still, a great and challenging climb.

Route Climbed: Lake Peak/Windsor Trail Loop Date Climbed: 2/96  Sucess!

Climbed in Feb. 1996 with James Harrison of Albuquerque, NM as an overnight trip. When we left the Santa Fe Ski basin parking lot, the biggest Blizzard to hit this area in a long time began raging, so we quickly lost all visibility. By the time we began the traverse along the South Ridge of Lake Peak, we could see only 10' in front of us. From the Summit of Penitente Peak we could see only a whiteout, and we ended up camping amongst the trees along the ridge below the summit. Despite all the snow, we had a great trip. The sun came out the next morning, but we had to shoe through 3' of new snow, which was kind of unnerving at times. Still, we had a blast!
