Interesting-looking rock!

What is that stuff?? Is it volcanic? Looks like it'd be fun to climb on!

Re: Interesting-looking rock!

It is basalt, which is volcanic. It is quite a bit softer than Granite. The sport climbing on it is decent, but the cracks are where it is at. Imagine 70 to 80 90 foot high cracks varying from thin fingers to wide offwidths and chimneys. FUN!

Another area that offers similar climbing close to Vantage in Tieton, near Yakima. The rock there is Andesite, which is a bit harder and more metemorphisized than Basalt. The same types of columns form.

So when are you going to visit and try it out?

Re: Interesting-looking rock!

I think that California's got enough crags to keep me doing sporting stuff here- it's more the alpine treats that will lure me over there, I'd say- Rainier, St. Helens, Glacier, Prusik, & Shukhsan are all on my list. So much climbing, so little time...
