We are taking another trip to Alaska this July (2014) and would welcome any recommendations for a 2-3 day backpacking trip. Two years ago we did the Crow Pass Trail and we're looking for another point to point trip of a similar length. I have been reading about the Ship Creek Valley Trail but am a bit concerned about the mud, overgrowth and lack of a clear trail to follow. I'm confident of my map and compass skills and it's obvious that one simply has to follow the creek but I figured I'd ask for some advice and recommendations of this and any other trails of a similar length with some variety of terrain and great views.l. The beaver ponds, marshy areas, and downed timber can make the Indian to Arctic Valley "trail" along Ship Creek a bit more than some would like. But if you like that sort of thing, it might fit your needs (although you wouldn't need to take two or three days). Another option might be to start up Indian Valley and head over the pass like you were headed toward Arctic Valley. But instead of going all the way down Ship Creek, try turning right at the confluence with the North Fork of Ship Creek and head to Bird Creek Pass and down to the Bird Creek trailhead.

Another option would be to head up Crow Pass and then cut west over Paradise Pass and then follow the North Fork of Ship Creek down toward the South Fork of the Eagle River trailhead, crossing over the ridge to the northeast near Triangle Pass.

These trips are routes, though, and the trailed sections are rather minimal.

If you like more established trails, the Resurrection Trail (Hope to Cooper Landing) and the K'esugi Ridge trail system in Denali State Park might be to your liking.

Thanks Steve, I'll take a look at your recommendations and probably come back with another question or two. The Ship Creek trip really piqued my interest because we do like a challenge but a 20 mile forced march through mud and blowdown can get a bit exasperating.
