Another avy death

by Alpinist » Fri Mar 12, 2010 1:45 am

A 20 year old snowboarder was killed in an avalanche yesterday a mile west of Arapahoe Basin "in a steep gully south of US 6". That's the 4th avy death this year. Be careful out there guys.

Very sad.

Prediction: a slew of posts are sure to follow about how unqualified and naive the person was by those who who spend their days blogging and ranting and boasting.

Sad, and not the best way to learn about the power of the mountains.

I find its much easier to dig using a shovel rather than a snowboard...

"His partners descended the path and used their snowboards to excavate him before organized rescue arrived."

Details: Back-country skiing (snowboarding -- whatever  ) in avalanche country. Spray on.

Or rantings from those that knew him and agree that the group wasn't prepared for where they were going (no avy gear, minimal knowledge and experience). I didn't personally know him. I spent Friday with several of his friends and coworkers. I know the area well, and wouldn't have been there in those conditions.
