I see you're new here. Getting both sides of the story isn't what we do.

And when the "Rest of the story" gets posted, cries come out of the wood work for an immediate banishment and instant scourging...

LOL John! The article begins...

"For six days last May on Mount McKinley, a climber from Croatia played chicken with Denali National Park rangers and volunteers. She was at 14,200 feet with no apparent injury or illness, but she insisted she wasn't going to walk off the mountain..."

That's as far as I got before I was ready to execute her.

Being irrational is unfortunately part of a textbook AMS description, isn't it...there's no need to know her side of story. I certainly would not issue summons to her although her crazy acts may look just for this kind of "reward". Injury is an injury and it doesn't have to be physical.

I bet her irrationality isn't of the acute variety, but I'm withholding any final judgment until we find out if she's hot.

It reminds me of a time when my wife and I were hiking in the Canadian Rockies. There were some parents with a teenage daughter on the trail, and the girl did not want to hike. So in protest, she started doing this really high-pitched shrieking. I was hoping the parents would smack her in the mouth, but they kept their composure and continued hiking, ignoring her. When she realized she wasn't getting her way, the girl shut up and started moving.

It's too bad the rangers didn't call this spolied little brat's bluff in a similar way.

Unfortunately the rangers were in a no-win situation. Since it wasn't an emergency they didn't want to fly her out but they couldn't just neglect her because she may have gotten injured just hanging around 14K or if she evenually left on her own (crossing the Kahiltna). I agree that when she refused to leave with her partner and the guides the park hired they should have arrested her and escorted her to the nearest jail.

It sets a scarey precedent; may give others the same idea!

Fortunately this climber is the only one out of thousands who have attempted Denali over the years so it's a rare incident. I'm sure the park service will be reviewing the situation to develop a protocol for handling similar cases in the future. Unfortunately they will have to balance the "government don't tell me what to do" with the "I'll sue if you don't help" culture in the US. Have to take the good with the bad I guess. Just hope in the future some injured climber (like me) isn't waiting to be rescued while the park service is ferrying out some spoiled brat. I just left Denali after jacking my back at 11,000'. For the first three hours each morning I was in constant pain (herniated disc) and couldn't stand up straight. After waiting three days to see if it got better we decided to come down. I was in constant agony until we hit base camp and still am here at home. A quick flight out would have been nice. That's available on Aconcagua but you have to pay dearly for it.

It may give them the idea, but only an extremely tiny fraction of those people who would be on Denali in the first place are willing to be that much of an asshole and actually carry out the idea.
