I just got back from the movie theater, we saw this film about a climb and ski of Mt. St. Elias:

Pretty good!

A good one that's kind of collected alot of dust is "La Vie Au Bout Des Doigts", which shows Patrick Edlinger soloing in the Verdon Gorge. Mind blowing stuff.

"Solo" by Mike Hoover is a great film.

And yep, "Solo" is amazing.

Usually I repeat myself when this thread comes up, but I vow not to this time. It's not a climbing movie, but "The Edge" has amazing scenery of the Canadian Rockies (supposed to be Alaska). I actually emailed the cinematographer once because I wanted to collect all the locations where scenes were filmed. He was real nice, but never got back to me, sigh.

"Cliffhanger" is very hard to beat for an action movie!

I thought it was violent at first, but the more you watch, the more you like!

Most of the movie was filmed in the Kananaskis area which is in the rockies but outside of Banff park. I remember when and where they were fiming and I recognize the valleys and mountains in most scenes. I will rent the movie some evening and put together a location list for you. (no guarantee but if I have time)

I thought 'Alone In The Wilderness' was very interesting. I still would like to see the original footage of Maurice Herzogs trip to Annapurna but that so far has been a dead end. 'Northface' movie wasn't bad, not my favorite though, but I really like the actor who plays Toni, seen him in other films. Good old 'Conquest of Everest' has a place in the old films list.

No one's mentioned "The Mountain," with Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner. Much better because of the actors than the actually climbing.

As a kid, I always remember "Banner in the Sky", back when they used to show The Wonderful World of Disney on Sundays nights, right after Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. I think that movie, along with "Solo" inspired me to start climbing more than anything else.

You're right, it was Third Man on the Mountain. I think it was based on the book Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey Ullman.

My friend Theron put this together after our climb on Slesse in 2005.



Cheesy? Yes. But the sound of carabiners jingling and memories of all the hijinks that magic weekend make it one of the best movies for me. I just wish there was more footage from John Scurlock's plane!

Thanks Tazz! Yes we did. Actually Theron does his own music for most of his films which is great. I wish I could climb the route again, it was really excellent.

Movies that show people moving in alpine terrain always get me excited. It doesn't have to be "hard climbing." I love that convention where a camera in a helicopter zooms in on people climbing up a ridge, then circles them as well. At this time of year, a scene like that is motivation to exercise!

The funny thing about that "I'm not leading"/"You have to" line, was that I was clove hitched into a kind of elaborate 3-nut anchor and extracting myself would be really tough. Much better for Aidan to just keep going! Luckily he didn't really mind...
