Whitney MR Route Partner for Sep 21 Weekend

by sm0421 » Thu Aug 08, 2013 4:31 pm

Hi, I have a conference in SF Sep 19 and I'm looking to do Whitney via Mountaineer Route in 1 day on Saturday, Sep 21. I will be driving from SF with a car, so I can pick you up in the Bay Area. I don't have a permit yet, my plan is to pick up a dayhike permit on Friday, Sep 20 at the ranger station.

I'm looking for a partner to hike Mountaineer's Route. Please contact me if you are interested, Thanks!

Take 120 through Yosemite and 395 south to Lone Pine.

Thanks mrchad! I'll do that, might spend some time in Yosemite on Sunday as well.

108/Sonora Pass for the cheapskates. $20 Yosemite toll, but worth it if you want to sightsee or hike.

Agreed. If you aren't looking to do something in Yosemite and don't have a park pass already, 108 is a good way only about 15-20 mintues longer depending on how you drive. Unless you go through Yosemite gate after 9-10 PM when it is free anyway.

Cars on 108 use turnouts. On 120 they don't!

I wish that were true! We had one guy this past weekend who apparently thinks it's his duty to hold everyone up just to be a dick. Thankfully it was close to the end, about where Dodge Ridge is, but I swear this guy was going about 35MPH in a 55. Reasonable speed may be lower than 55 in some spots, but there was a line of about 15 cars, including a guy towing a horse trailer, and an RV. This jerk never used any of the turnouts, disregarding about 4 of 5 signs telling slower cars to use turnouts, and even though some of these turnouts were quite long. Just wanted to be a dick. Finally got around him when it opened up to 2 lanes, and a LOT of the other drivers were pissed. He was just cruising along in his NECKCAR-stickered truck with the windows down...ironic the race car fan drives worse than a granny.

In any case, for most of these mountain passes, you can't be in a huge rush, it's just too stressful, because it seems like you'll be stuck behind cars at least a few times.
