Current Snow Conditions on Mount Washington

by MadMatt » Fri Dec 14, 2012 1:54 am

Spending 4 days at Mount Washington next week (17-20) Can't find any information on snow fall up there this year. Can anyone help me out. Weather Report is calling for Snow next week while we will be there, looking for a locals thoughts on lugging my skis and snow shoes along or leave them at home. I would hate to miss fresh powder or be post holing all over the mountain, because i didn't bring my gear but I'm coming from NC and will be visiting family in OH until after Christmas. I would like some BETA on Conditions and anyone's thoughts are Welcome.

"This time of year, microspikes are more helpful than crampons and worth their weight in gold"

In other words, no snow worth mentioning that hasn't already melted and re-frozen into thin glaze ice.

However, things can change very fast in late December.

"moderate snow accumulations will be possible for the interior"

Currently the long-range forecast is for no more than an inch or two (in N Conway -could get a little more on the mountain) on each of the snowiest days next week , but those forecasts can change. If you're really motivated to ski, bring the sticks (a pair that you're willing to scratch up): you will probably manage a few turns in a few places, and you might get lucky and wake up to a nice drift in the lower Bowl. If you're more worried about getting stuck, I'd bring snowshoes to the base of the mountain and chat with the rangers when you get there. (Talk to more than one person - sometimes the staff at the desk has been in the ravines lately and has been keeping an eye on the weather/avvy forecast, sometimes they haven't.)
