Desolation Wilderness 2016 - Conditions

by strongfam1 » Mon May 09, 2016 8:22 am

Hoping to go from Echo into Lake Aloha the first week of June. Anybody been up there? Think trails will be clear? Lake Aloha free of ice? Thanks so much!

I was up there last weekend. Camped at the edge of Lake Aloha above Heather Lake. We came in from Glen Alpine and snowline was (depending on aspect) around 7,000. Trails are still very snowy in the high country, and lakes still mostly covered (we skied across Susie and Heather Lakes, but Grass Lake was melted out). We dug about two feet down at Lake Aloha to get water. It snowed 4-6 inches the night we camped up there, and it has been unsettled since then. I'm sure it will get warmer and melt some in the next three weeks, but you're still looking at mostly snow if you're coming in from Echo.
