Guidebook recommendations for Canadian Rockies

by jbsantos » Tue Nov 16, 2010 4:08 am

I'm an avid scrambler and took a mountaineering course this summer. I'm looking to take another course next year, but wanted to do some reading over the winter on routes in the Rockies. I'm looking for a good guidebook on alpine climbs. I haven't heard a lot of good things about Sean Dougherty's "Selected Alpine Climbs in the Canadian Rockies" (i.e. the "Book of Lies").

I've heard of Bill Corbett's "The 11,000ers", but I was looking for something more general, especially one that covers the easier routes often used in courses.

Every other guide book besides those two get more technical i.e. Bow Valley Rock, Waterfall Ice, etc.....except for two scramble books, neither of which include alpine routes for the most part. Most any easy alpine route we guide is in fact in Sean's book. If you are looking for corrections to the book of lies, more specifically....first hand accounts from someone who has climbed the routes, you are welcome to peruse this page on SP...fairly comprehensive.

You are also welcome to ask me more specific questions about any route. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick reply, Dow. I had a feeling that would be the response. I guess I'll get the book and cross-reference with the information on this site. I'm fairly new to the sport, so I'm just discovering these online communities, but everyone here seems very helpful from what I've seen on the forums.

Honestly, Dow's page is the best resource out there for clear firsthand experience in an orderly format.

Skip the $$ for the guidebook, buy some paper, and start printing some SP pages

Cheers!

Thanks for the book suggestion, sharperblue.
