aggreed

I have just come back from Thassos. Some fantastic little mountains of white marble in the centre of the island. Alas I could not climb. But aggreed Greece has some nice looking peaks, small and larger. I would be interested to see what anyone has done, even on the islands.

I climbed Psiloritis

Or Idhi Oros, depending on which literature you read. I really liked the views from the top, especially into the Mediterranean.

I'd like to try Mt. Olympus someday if I get the chance.

Agio Oros (Mount Athos) is the most special mountain of Greece.
Taigetos mountains are very special too. Then, Pindos...and what about the Lefka Ori (Crete?...).

Greece has much more than sea and islands...for the ones who look beyond the known places, and Olympus is not the 'only' big mountain in Greece.

Pachnes

by parky » Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:50 pm

Whilst I don't think the mountain itself is particularly attractive, I do think that a visit to Pachnes - the highest point in the Lefka Ori or White Mountains on Crete - is a beautiful destination. For me the memories of a 2-day solo trip there using public transport from Chania to Omalos will last much longer than those of climbing Psiloritis or Dikti.
I also think that Gingilos is a beautiful Cretan mountain, in an absolutely stunning location. Climbing it is well worth it for the extensive views it gives over the White Mountains, with the Samarian Gorge between.

Now, had you asked about a beautiful bivouac site in Greece, I'd then be recommending Katsivelli as an absolutely superb location, just within stiking distance of Pachnes. What a place to stay - so isolated and so peaceful. I hope to finish preparing a trip report on this in the near future.

Hm. I figured I might see a post from one of the (older than me) regulars with an old photo of Melina Mecurri's breasts.

One of Olympus, Olymbos, or Olympos.

Does climbing the Lasithi Plateau on a bicycle count? There was something up there that I climbed on foot. Fantastic. Lots of really old ruins. Old even by Greek standards and I'm not talking about the windmills.
