AAC President Doug Walker killed

Doug Walker was killed in an avalanche December 31st on Granite Mountain in Washington.

Walker was both an entrepreneur and active conservationist. He was President of the American Alpine Club, a former director and chairman of REI, founding president of the Seattle Parks Foundation, and immediate past chair of the governing council of The Wilderness Society. He was also a founder and CEO of a software company.

13 peope have died in Tatra Mountains since December 25th.

Tatra Mountains rescuers say that six tourists have slipped and fallen to their deaths since Dec. 25 while trekking on frozen snow and ice in the Polish Tatras. Seven other died in falls in the Slovak part of the Tatras.
