America's Great Outdoors

The Bush administration had planned to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service with a "Centennial Initiative-2016." This was essentially a big construction project, an updated version of Mission 66. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_66). Not my cup of tea.

The Obama administration quietly stopped the program and took down the website and links. They've rolled out an alternative:

US mountain guide dies on Yanapaqcha

Once again sad news out of the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. US mountain guide Tyler Anderson was on a Mountain Madness guiding trip on Yanapaqcha

The article is in Spanish, but it appears that he fell in a deep crevasse due to a collapsed snow bridge.

Bison in Yellowstone

Because grizzlies aren't the only animals in Yellowstone . . . .

There's a long dispute in Montana about bison who wander outside the park in winter. Local ranchers would love to see them removed (killed). 2010 Accidents in North American Mountaineering

I just finiished reading the AAC's annual report. These are some items that struck me:

1. As in past years, rappel and lowering errors were abundant (rope too short, no knots in ends of rope). A recurring error on 2-strand rappels was failure to thread rope to anchor at middle mark resulting in rapping off uneven ends.
