Attack/Robbery on Orizaba

by KevinCraig » Thu Mar 30, 2006 7:06 am

I don't have all the details yet and some of these might not be 100% accurate (heard it from a friend who is a friend of the principals)...

On Sunday(?) two climbers (a husband and wife) from Littleton were attacked, shot with a shotgun, and robbed of all their gear and other possessions at their high camp on Orizaba.

The good news is that by playing dead, they survived and are recovering while still in Mexico. Reportedly the husband got hit in the chest with 18 pellets. They were camped a little ways above and well off to one side from the Piedra Grande hut. They reportedly watched this guy walk up through the boulderfield toward them for some time before they realized that he was armed. Apparently he walked into camp and without a word, shot them both. Reportedly, the guilty party has not yet been identified or apprehended.

I don't know what to think of this or what message to take away, but forewarned is forearmed (perhaps litterally).

DAMN Banditos! They'll get ya everytime! Do not think for a moment, anyone, that you are immune from this occurring to you! Whenever we climbed below the border, out in secret spots that were in the middle of nowhere, either out of CA or AZ, we were armed for bear and were prepared to shoot em in the face and take no prisoners. We were actually told, on several different trips, by the Mex Nat Policia, that if we ever had an incident out in the desert, to ensure that the attacker/s were "Muerto" and to bury him/them and forget it ever happened. That would save them the paperwork.

Sure sounds like a solution until you realize that bringing firearms into a foreign country could get you into a TON of trouble. If you want to see a Mexican prison keep on packing.

Kevin - thanks for the news and please let us know if you find out any additional information.
