Conditions in Julian Alps, Slovenia

by aec » Mon Jun 16, 2008 7:56 pm

Does anyone have any information on current conditions in the Julian Alps? Is there still much winter snow and ice left? Will be hiking from end June for about a week and want to be prepared.

Many thanks,
AEC

I'm planning on hiking on Stenar, Kriz etc next week. Has anyone been up there recently? I've been told that there could be a bit of snow, but I'm unsure if there is a lot of it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to pack the ice-axe...

I hiked from Kobarid to Bohinj via Krn, the Komna plateau, Bogatin and Mahavsek last Tues/Weds and conditions are fine. It's pretty hot over there at the moment though, and there is a bit of rapidly melting snow (more like ice) in various spots over about 1700m, but nothing dodgy. Path markings all very visible and most of the huts should be open from last weekend. Thunder storms in the evenings also and it gets a bit hazy after 10 am. a great time to go hiking over there though.
