Between Ketchum and Stanley is there a lot of free undesignated campsites? Also, how much are designated campsites in this same area?

There are many FS campgrounds along Hwy 75, both on the Ketchum side along the Wood River, and on the lakes on the Stanley side. Don't know the fees because I don't use them. Here's at least a partial list:

There is also a lot of "dispersed camping" but not right on the highway: you have to drive up a side road.

If you don't already own a copy, buy "Idaho, A Climbing Guide" by Tom Lopez (shameless plug- Tom is a friend). It lists almost all major Idaho peaks, along with access to same. Those access roads usually take one to good camp spots.

I'd recommend the Iron Creek area. The actual trailhead/campground is small and typically crowded, however along the creek to the campground offers anywhere between a dozen to 2 dozen areas that do not require a fee.

A normal campground will run you $13/night, but why pay that when there are so many areas to camp outside of the campground. I've stayed in this area almost a dozen times this summer without any issues. And the best part is the $$ you save for the camp fee you can go get a tasty French Dip from Mountain Village!
