Recent Longs Peak accident- beta?

by Diggler » Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:51 pm

I recently heard second-hand about an accident on Longs Peak, in which a man was apparently blown off the mountain, maybe 2 weeks ago or so. From what I can tell, it probably happened at the Narrows. Anybody have any further information on this, or links to a story that describes it? Thanks.

There is a post on 14ers.com about a man falling to death a week or two ago. Not sure if it's the same accident. I think that accident or possible suicide was closer to the north face though.

Might be the same accident, digs. Conflicting reports, as usual, and much speculation about suicide. However it sounds as if the fellow was an avid mountaineer and death was accidental, in spite of the musings of a park ranger.

Did a little research and came up with the following links:

I heard some hikers talking about this incident when I was hiking Longs Peak on the 12th (a week and a half ago). Didn't hear the specifics on what exactly happened. It turns out that the helicopter a friend and I heard while hiking Estes Cone on the 11th coincides with the time that a helicopter that flew out with the body (see http://www.nps.gov/romo/parknews/pr_longs_peak_fatality.htm)

Sad deal. Sounds like he was an avid mountain runner from some of the reports I read and that he was a fun loving likable guy. RIP
