When I went through the NH Whites years ago (1974-94), I wore just heavy, plain-vibram-soled boots. I never came across anything that hinted at a need for sticky rubber. There was a lot of boulder-hopping, and decent ankle support is appreciated for that activity.
I've had some other people tell me ankle support is good to have, especially for carrying heavier loads... Can anybody recommend a good boot for 3-season NE hiking?
