Size 15(US) plastic mountaineering boots

by soaceoddity » Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:23 pm

Hi All,

Im looking to buy a pair of plastic mountaineering boots. I have rented the Lowa Civetta in size 15 for Mt Washington last week and those worked quite fine.

Am i limited to that model or are there any other brands/models that are available in size 15?

Also, other than ebay and craigs list, whats a good place to look for used gear?

thanks in advance

I emailed La Sportiva a couple of months ago and found out they offer the Baruntse up to size 50. Depending on your foot size a 49 or 50 might work for you. Just another option to consider.

Wow! La Sportiva REALLY makes some of their boots up to size 50?? I've never seen sizes greater than 48 listed on their website or on retailer's web sites... Would that be a custom request for extra cost? Any details?

The sizes for the Baruntse are listed right on the LS website so they aren't custom. Whittaker Mountaineering stocks the Baruntses in those larger sizes. On their site a 49 is a 14.5 and the 50 is a 15 plus. Same cost as any other Baruntse.

I don't think LS makes custom boots and almost all the rest of their shoe/boot offerings don't go up to that size. I guess they sized up this one boot in an attempt to compete with Lowa for the very very small market share of plus sized mountaineering boots. Here's to hoping that they'll expand their offerings in the future.

Thanks for the help. I think i will stick with lowa, as the La Sportivas are a bit out of my price range.

Thanks again,
