South Bay Area bouldering?

by LithiumMetalman » Fri Mar 05, 2010 8:14 pm

Hi!

I'm planning on moving down from Davis/Vacaville area to San Jose area, and looking for great areas to go bouldering doing the midweek (besides Castle Rock)...so, are there any other cool areas to go to?

-How is Indian Joe Caves?
-Any other secret spots that is great for bouldering?
-trying to avoid the gym, if possible, so help a brother out!

thanx so much!

Have you checked out the Supertopo Bay Area bouldering guide? I covers quite a bit down there.

I hiked out to Indian Joe Caves a while back to check it out. The rock looked nice, anchors looked good, but the whole place was swimming in poison oak! I hate poison oak!

(tempted to head back with some roundup!)

And there's a decent description in the SF Bay Falcon Guide.

Also in Sunol, hike up the Alameda Creek road and take the "W Tree Rock Scramble" (so called because a tree shaped like a big W marks the start...seriously). It's not really bouldering per-se, but a fun little hidden rock hop for about a mile up a narrow gulch. And as a bonus you can loop back around to Indian Joe Caves.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I used to live in Berkeley; used to climb quite a bit at Cragmont, Remilliard and Indian Rock.

From the South Bay, the drive up north doing the week would be killer for a quick session!

Too bad the Mezzones are gone!

Cheers!
