Yeah, I checked the NPS site and it does say 1 day in advance, guess they changed the procedure. But like Scott said, you can build your itinerary around Alaska Basin that doesn't require permits.

I've hitchhiked from Jenny Lake to Jackson. Also, Jackson Lake Lodge runs shuttles that run between Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake Lodge from the Lodge there is another shuttle that goes to the town of Jackson, from there you can hop on a bus to Teton Village. I would check with Jackson Lake Lodge come summer about their shuttle schedules... Jackson Lodge is a great place to grab beer and a burger apres hike and watch sunset and wildlife from the deck...
