Red Sandstone Road Vail, Colorado

Does anyone know if any of the Red Sandstone road is open? Or when it opens? Does the road still have enough snow to ski? This is the road that takes you to Piney Lake. Thanks.

Kane-

Snow level was still down just above Vail yesterday. Unless the road is plowed, I doubt it is open to Piney Lake. Chicagotransplant might know for sure-he lives in Avon.

I'll check it out this weekend for you. I'm not sure what the usual date the gate opens on the Sandstone road, I know they try and have it open by Memorial Day (weather permitting of course). I was in the Gores last weekend up Booth Creek Trail to the waterfall. There is a lot more snow this year at this time than in my previous trips in early May.

I will second that for sure. Went to the falls yesterday after a friend of mine climbed West Partner. His exact words were "the trail is pretty clear of snow". After hiking to the falls I realized he must have got the trail confused with another because there is still lots of snow up there.

We didn't end up biking the Sandstone Road, headed up June Creek in Edwards instead. I did drive by the gate later in the day, and it is still closed. They actually have the lower gate closed, which is about 1/2 mile below the normal winter closure. I'll post an update to this thread when I learn anything new.
