The Index- San Juan Mtns.

by Kiefer » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:22 pm

Wondering if anyone has any beta/info or possibly pictures of, The Index, located
down in the Needles sub-range of the San Juan Mountains?
Scoping it out for a possible attempt later in August.

I know it's an impossibly complicated ridge, resplendent with spires & towers and one stiff climb.

We were able to give it a good stare from camp in Ruby Basin, I'll email you photos, but I don't know where the route is!

The route is approached from the east side of the index. Its a helluva scree scramble up to it out of Ruby Creek (not sure if you can get to it from Noname) and then it is a pretty easy 4th Class scramble to the index. The climbing is only 5.6-7ish (so hard to rate things in the Needles area) and is eaither done in one long pitch or two short pitches. We were able to rap off and downclimb (only advisable for competent climbers) using one rope. Two ropes would make a single rap easy. Hope that helps.

Wow! Thanks SOOO much for these tidbits.
Got the shots, Mike and thanks, Iceisnice for that eastern suggestion.
SInce you've climbed it already, we'll scope it out from that direction. The scree crawling can't be as bad as what's down on Coffeepot...or is it?

Thanks again, guys!!! :D

Coffepot?.......Are you talking about Teakettle?........and no, the scree is not as bad as Teakettle, but, it probably just as hard in its own way. Its one steep "climb" outta Ruby creek. Hopefully you get it. Not a lot of people have climbed the Index (and many have attempted it).
