Where should I start?!

by nickrp83 » Tue Oct 05, 2010 6:03 pm

So last year I climbed baldy and really liked it and really want to start summiting more and higher peaks! I was thinking of doing san gorgonio this oct before we really get any snow ( don't have snow shoes or crampons yet). Any suggestions on training or gear? Any peak suggestions?

If what you want is San Gorgonio, take a map, some water, warm clothing and a shell for the cold, windy summit and you are good to go.

Yes, just keep getting out and enjoy the mountains. From trail hiking to technical climbing - there are lots of options once you get started.

If you're looking for company there are hiking groups out there like the Sierra Club....etc. The Sierra Club's Hundred Peaks Section maintains a pretty wonderful site with detailed route info on lots of Southern California Mountains: http://angeles.sierraclub.org/hps/hpslist.htm

The Meetup groups have also become pretty popular places to find people to hike with. We have a pretty informal meetup group that does a lot of peakbagging in SoCal and a bit in the Sierra - mostly hikes and scrambles: http://www.meetup.com/SoCal-Hikers-and-Peakbaggers
