Weminuche Question

by Westcliffe Willie » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:00 pm

I was wondering if someone would be able to tell me if after the snow has melted are the roads from Bayfield up to Vallecito Reservoir then east over to the Pine River Campground/trailhead passable by a low slung 2wd car?

Also if there is a visible trail (or a fairly easy access with full size packs) from Moon Lake north to Rock Lake? I have a paper map that says no and two mapping programs that says yes. I've learned from experience not to trust either..

Thanks in advance

Moon Lake to Rock Lake is pretty obvious when you get up there. I did see a couple of cairns, but, I don't know where there would be a "trial" and its totally unecessary. Its pretty easy terrain to hike (I ran it and it would be easy with a pack to hike), you just have to make sure you aim for the right "pass" to go over between the lakes. Its not a lot of elevation gain to it. Don't sweat it, you'll easily figure it out when you get up there and you'll see why you don't need to worry about a trail....its just wide open, high alpine terrain.

And yes, the road to the Pine Creek trailhead can easily be travelled on by any vehicle. Its pretty well maintained. Beautiful area up around those lakes (Emerald Lake is amazing) and not many people up there (I've never seen anyone).

How the hell are ya, Tonka. I saw that you were out here in Colorado last July. I couldn't make it this past time. Hiding from the revenuers. Otherwise I would have brought the "Kermitmobile" and we could have reminisced about old times.

Trucks running fine. Kermit has passed to a new life. Was driving up Monarch Pass. Truck starting to overheat. Smoke started billowing around Kermit and pretty soon flames were shootin out his ass (hmmmm, can I say ass? Oh well continuing on) Nowhere to pull over. Ended up having services over near the ski resort. May he rest in pieces.

By the way, I'm sure glad you posted that photo. Ever since the fire, I've been trying to figure out which is the frunt of my truk. By golly!!! Now I know.

Maybe I'll catch you on this years SP gathering.

Take care.
