Mt Charleston in early May

by daw37 » Sun Feb 20, 2011 3:33 pm

I'm on a trip flying out of vegas on 8th May and was wondering whether Mt Charleston would be possible the day or two before. Having looked at the main page I've seen that there will almost certainly be snow left. Barring the usual caveat of depending on snow levels - how bad could it be? In particular will I get a car up to the trailhead (it'll be a rental) and would technical equipment be useful? I'm experienced with ice-axe / crampsons so happy to pack them if necessary...

Thanks!

David

I'm pretty sure there will be a lots of snow left over the Mt.Charleston Peak.
I've been to Lee Peak (its right next to the Charleston Peak) on May 4th 2010.
This is the photo album web page.

As you can see the picture on my photo album, there are still tons of snow up on the Mountain. I guess there will be covered with snow over 10,000 ft in Early May. (Charleston Peak is 11,918 ft)

The snow will be hard packed/icey. Crampons and ice axe is mandatory especialy if you want to take North Loop Trail.

Check out the thread titled "Mt. Charleston conditions" and have a look at pics posted by MoapaPk......... we're having a decent snow year, so......yes to all the equipment questions
(crampons, axe, snowshoes could be useful) and probably yes to rental car access to trailhead in theory but in reality, impossible to 100% predict....cheers
