Conditions in Pecos Wilderness?

by aggiegeog » Wed Apr 06, 2011 8:09 pm

I may have the chance to make a trip out to the Pecos this weekend so just wanted to see what the snow conditions are like. Would probably just do Jicarita or something similar as I feel that is hikable even in snow as it is gently sloped and ~11mi round trip. I see that there has been some new snow with more to come soon.
This would be kind of a trial for a Trans-Pecos hike/peakbagging trip in June that I hope to do.

Heading up tonight, if I make an attempt it will likely be on Monday.

Missed your first post. Let us know what you find. It snowed some yesterday, but it's been very warm and dry for a while. I'm guessing you'll still find a fair amount of rotten snow in the trees, but I expect it's been going fast. The last year winter we had that was this bad, I hiked the Truchas snow-free in early May, and I'm thinking of trying it again this year.

We had a few inches of snow over the weekend at 8900 ft, but it melted during the day. Hiked up to about 10,300 ft on The Knob, snow most of the way post-holing above 9800 ft in the forest.
