If i want to reach good brazilian mountains i have to travel at least 350kms to any direction.

North and North east - Itatiaia National Park (350kms)
East - Caparaó National Park (1000kms of freeways)
South - Ibitiraquire range (400 kms)
West - Flat land, there's nothing (except far far west, Andes)

Those look like hills, maybe even mountains just outside of the city. I don't think you realize just how flat Florida is.

While there is no real climbing in Florida there is definitely some great hiking, especially if you like seeing flowers, birds and wild animals. I spent a couple years on a job assignment in Tampa and I used to go running in a park near my office at lunch. I'd see alligators, flamingos, spoon bills, herons, and various other water birds, snakes, and wild mammals every day, all within a couple miles of an office park. One of the most memorable hikes I've ever done was when I decided to do a mid-week dive in a cave near home (Eagle's Nest). At the time it was on private hunting land, accessible only via undeveloped swamp roads, and I didn't have time to arrange access with the caretaker, so I made a commando run and did it at midnight. Unfortunately I made a wrong turn on the way out and I got my leased company car stuck in the swamp, so had to hike six miles out to a developed road by moonlight so that I could call a tow truck to pull out my car. A Florida swamp is both an eerie and beautiful place at night, full of animal sounds, plant and flower scents, and eyes looking at you from out of dark.

But you have Rio a quick hop away which has solid rock climbing and amazing beaches and surf.

*although I've heard the rivalry between paulistas and portenos is legendary

thinking outside of the US, maybe the worst case scenario would be living in a completely flat country...under a dictatorship, etc, that never lets you leave

I admit, I have been stuck in Florida for a few weeks during summer time and very quickly missed having my mountain views from home. I have to admit they have very impressive lightening storms that quickly entertain me.

But Florida isn't all bad, I mean they have very good sunrise's!

What's your point? I'm obviously agreeing with you if you get down as far south as Miami. The Smoky Mountains are less than 10 hours from Orlando. I didn't mention anything about Georgia and the drive Arthur speaks of is almost 8 not 5 hours.

This is Jaragua Peak. It has just 1200m and several, several private properties with antenas on its top. No mountaineers do hike there. The trail takes only around one hour and that's it.

Portenos? ahahahahah....People from Sao Paulo - paulistas/ People from Rio like me - Cariocas!
Not really much of a thing these days...
And yes, beautiful mountains, brazilian rock climbing meca, but, as the other ones to East, 400km away.
