Baker & Shuksan conditions?

by dcsawyer » Sun Jul 01, 2012 1:13 pm

I've seen some reports on Cascade Climbers about the North Ridge on Baker, but nothing about any of the other routes there or any reports on Shuksan. Looking to do Fisher Chimneys in 10 days and a route on Baker. What are the conditions like? Large wet slides? Has the snow consolidated? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

You can probably assume if the NR on Baker is in shape, so is the rest of the mountain. If it warms up considerably you could have post holing action or some wet slides. All reports indicate conditions are good. Fisher Chimneys will likely still be largely or a least partially snow filled, it is an unusual year. I typcially don't do Fisher Chimenys until August to make sure they are snow free.

From outside of town it looked like there was still snow on the Shuksan summit pyramid. Only recently have temps been above freezing on the summit and our spring has been unseasonably cool for the most part. With the freezing level where it has been the summit probably got some snow in the past few days. Last year (huge snow year) was challenging for climbers getting to the summit and a lot of earlier season attempts were turned around.

Looks like we have a high pressure system headed over later in the week with sun and warm temps, so hopefully that will consolidate the snow even more for when you get here.

I bet Baker will be in good enough shape. Fisher Chimneys is somewhat of a question mark. Keep your eye on CascadeClimbers.com for trip reports for Shuksan. I know Sulphide glacier has been climbed a couple times. Call the ranger station in Glacier, WA before your trip to find out conditions on Fisher Chimneys. If conditions are bad (snow filled, wet, drippy) you can always switch to the Sulphide. Not as interesting a route IMNSHO, but a viable alternative.
