Thunder Mountain XC Pass?

by sbmathias » Fri Aug 03, 2012 4:51 pm

Planning a backpacking romp in the Sequoia NP backcountry. This includes going over what appears to be a doable (Class 2) cross-country pass about 0.4mi west of Thunder Mountain. However, I can't find any references to anyone actually going over this one. This is not Secor's "Thunder Pass", which is ESE of Thunder Mountain.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

My GF and I went over that a 3 years back. From N to S. We followed the GW Divide - Sphinx lakes notch at 12K, dropping to upper Brewer lake, to S. Guard lake, down Cunningham creek and back up the canyon leading to west of Thunder. You find exactly what you need to cross easily. I remember it being better N to S (my GF is ok with up, but doesn't like steep down). Definitely not worse than c2. Sorry no pix, but you have my personal anonymous internet guarantee that it goes easy.
