The issue about the Langley death was resolved as best we can know, weeks back. Most of the thread has little to do with that death, including many of my own comments. I won't object to an edit with OR segue.

In every situation there is more than one possible outcome/solution. But we usually chose one path and continue to follow it. We choose it based on circumstances of the occurring event, our mental and physical stages at that point which are influenced and shaped by the factors/elements of the environment the event is happening in. Our overall mentality, point of view on many aspects of life, and a survival instinct play also a role how we act and which path we choose.

In home or office environment it is easy to judge or lay out different path which, however, is also important and may be valuable for many in case of similar event they might be involved in the future. This is what education, trainings, practical exercises, and other forms of preparation are for.

However, this thread should stay focused on the initial topic, Langley death.

Back to the OP.


Just got off the phone with a good local buddy that is a SR member of the Inyo SAR Team and was fully involved with incident. Appears that this sad incident and the latest Norman Clyde incident could have been completely avoidable ones.

This one in particular, was definitely weather related via the pushing the envelope of the impending extreme TS forecast that came true. Apparently it got pretty bad up there.

Definitely a lesson learned to not mess with or push your luck with any obvious incoming/brewing Sierra Thunderstorm. Regardless ones experience level. It will win and it can kill you.

Do they have an idea as to what happened with the NC one? I hadn't heard anything.

Appears the Doctor may have gotten disorientated. Have yet to see anything on the autopsy report. This of course would indicate whether that disorientation was in part due to ALS, HAPE, HACE or any other physical ailment. Which of course would make complete sense IMO.

I was on Tyndall same day as the accident and we got up and off early as we had seen clouds come in around 10AM the day before. Tropical moisture was pushing up from southern california creating the rain and possible thunderstorms. We did not want to be on slabs or ridge in those conditions. The day of the accident there was rain, thunder and lightning on the peaks from before noon and through the afternoon. Clouds had already started to appear early in the day. Rocks got wet and slippery on the hike out. The system covered a good portion both north and south of Whitney and this would not have been a good time to go for a summit
