Exepdition support system - Denali

by subhrojyoti » Tue Nov 19, 2013 2:05 am

I'm looking for people who arrange support system for Denali expeditions. These are not necessarily guide services but help with logistics.

The support program will provide you with transportation from the airport to hotel, will help pick up supplies in Anchorage and arrange for air taxi to Base Camp. They will also plan and purchase 15 days of food, give advice when asked, pay Denali National Park Entry fee and Base Camp fee, and provide with a sled that one willl use to ferry supplies.

Any information would be of great help.

TIA

I'm not familiar with such a company, but can tell you a few things as my memory allows:
You have to APPLY to climb, at least 60 days prior- it's not simply paying a fee.
Sleds are free at base camp. When we were there, there was a big stack of them.
There is no base camp fee, but you have to buy fuel after you land.

subhrojyoti,
splattksi is correct.
Much of what is on your request list is handled by mountain guide services that are authorized to operate in Denali National Park.
Since it doesn't sound like you are interested in using a mountain guide service on Denali, here's a summary/little more info FWIW:

"transportation from the airport to hotel": Taxi/Airport Shuttle
"will help pick up supplies in Anchorage": You
"arrange for air taxi to Base Camp": You
"plan and purchase 15 days of food": You
"give advice when asked": fellow climbers, possibly guides/NPS rangers
"pay Denali National Park Entry fee": You
"provide with a sled that one willl use to ferry supplies": Free cheapies (that work) are available at Kahiltna International Airport (aka KIA)

Here are two B&Bs in Anchorage that you may find helpful (they seem to cater to climbers as well):
Earth Bed & Breakfast

Arctic Fox Inn

Here are a couple private transportation companies that get you from Anchorage to Talkeetna.

FWIW, If you are looking to save a few bucks, you can avoid shelling out more dinero for lodging in Talkeetna by flying with Talkeenta Air Taxi.

Typically, you should be able to stay for free in the "bunkhouse" (it's rustic/not luxurious, but hey, you're climbing the Big Mac right?) :D
1. the night before you fly
2. during any days your flight is delayed due to weather conditions
3. possibly the night you return (if you are coming in late).
I would double check with TAT on their client bunkhouse-stay policy

FWIW, if you do decide to take a second look at going guided, I recommend Mountain Trip or Alaska Mountaineering School.

Best of luck on your trip!

Climbed a lot with Mountain Trip and if you go that direction, you can't go wrong with them. There is however a company in ANC that does just what you want, I'll look for the info.
