Mt Whitney permit?

by ScottHanson » Fri May 09, 2014 5:32 pm

I received my lottery rejection notice for Whitney permit (main trail) climb on August 22. I am thinking of walking into Lone Pine office day before and see if a permit is available. Curious if folks have had much luck acquiring permit in this way.
Thanks for any comments,
Scott

I've always been able to get one (or more) the day before, even on a weekend in Aug.

Definitely go for it! People cancel or don't show up for whatever reason, so it's worth a shot. Good luck!

Yep, I've never failed to get a leftover/cancellation permit. Build an extra day into your trip in case you have to wait a day (I had to do that once), and make back-up plans in the event there are no leftover permits.

I always feel quite smug, looking at the line up at the ESIVC for Whitney as I get my permit for any one of another entry points further north. I haven't been on the trail since running it in the early 80's. Hmmm… still quite a lovely trail I suppose, even with all the problems.
