waste on everest (article)

Nothing really new, except that I didn't realize just how bad it was. The words "fecal time bomb" just should never be used together.

I can't say about fecal pollution (which I'm sure is nasty), but on the plus side, trash wise, Everest has been really cleaned up in recent years, at least compared to what it was a few years ago.

I was surprised to see in December 2012 (after Everest climbers were gone) that Base Camp was almost clean except for a banner and a few prayer flags. I have heard that the camps above and the South Col are cleaner than it used to be a well.

Gorak Shep was a clean place with flush toilets (though I don't want to think about where flushed sewage goes) and nothing like Krakauer described it back in 1996.
