Grand Traverse Sleeping Bag recommendations?

by turkbrim9 » Fri Apr 24, 2015 2:09 pm

I'm looking at sleeping bags for a Grand Traverse attempt this summer (most likely at the end of July/Early August). I was looking at the Western Mountaineering Summerlite

I like the versatility of the full zipper. I will be sleeping in a tent or bivy. I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations or if this would be a good option? Thanks

Which Grand Traverse? The one in the Tetons? (There are at least a few routes named the "Grand Traverse"). If you mean the Tetons, a 32F bag (though all 32F bags are not created equal) will generally be a bit on the cool side, but survivable. I'd prefer something slightly warmer myself.

I agree with Scott. I've been to the Tetons twice during the first week of August and I appreciated the warmth of my WM Apache Super Dryloft (15F). The Ultralite looks like a good choice.

Thanks for the advise. I am talking about the tetons. Good to know about temps.

If you are comparison shopping, take a look at the Feathered Friends Swallow http://featheredfriends.com/swallow-nan ... g-bag.html. Similar quality with a bit of a price break.

Montbell makes a good bag that is sub 2lbs. Downhugger 650 is a 30 degree bag that weighs in at 1lb 13oz and is DWR treated. $199. Just a suggestion. Western mountaineering makes a good product.

I have the WM UltraLite and use it for fall-season camping in the Sierra. It is a bit cool for the occasional early-winter storm, but I layer up when needed and find it an ideal weight. My only advice is to go with a bag slightly longer than you might think you'd need. For example, if you're close to 6 feet tall, get a 6'6" bag. I have some FF garments as well... very high quality down but maybe a tad less quality in the shell materials.

I bought a 10F WM Versalite bag (to use with my bivy sack) for Evolution Traverse and was very happy with it in terms of bulk, weight and warmth. Temps dropped below freezing, but it was reasonable with the bag and my down jacket.

Feathered Friends Vireo coupled with a down jacket would be my choice. My Vireo has overfill, and I've used it happily down into the high teens (with a down jacket)
