Smoke and Tahoe Climbing

by RyderS » Thu Aug 29, 2013 7:58 pm

So I was hoping to get out to climb at the Leap for the long weekend, but I got word from a friend who was up there a bit more than a week ago climbing up in Tahoe was pretty bad because of the smoke being blown north from the Yosemite Rim Fire. Anyone have an update of the conditions in the past few days? Definitely would help to know before I drive out.

It is somewhat better today (I can actually see the near shore of the lake from my place) but still bad enough that I'd avoid the whole area.
I'm planning on getting out of Tahoe for the weekend.

If anyone is planning on driving up from the west this weekend, I'd generally aim for south of the fire.

Nevermind on that whole "being able to see the lake" thing:

Weather Underground has a very decent fire/smoke layer on their weather map. On the right side of the page, scroll down to "Fire" and select "Active Fires". It's pretty accurate in my experience. Doesn't do forecasts though.

Thanks for the info. Bummer that outdoor fun up there has stalled because of this smoke.

It cleared up quite a bit after lunchtime today. Still hazy but nowhere near what its been.

Soot cloud appears to be up at a higher altitude now:

Great point, except for the fact that it's not like that at all -- someone simply asked about conditions in Tahoe so they could plan their weekend. The nerve of them. :-)
