Smoke in Bishop

by MoapaPk » Fri Sep 19, 2014 9:28 pm

I just heard that Bishop is pretty smoky as of noon Friday 9/19/14. Is it looking better? I thought they had the June Lake fires under control.

Thanks.

Web cams for Owens Valley and beyond can be found here, along with a forecast mentioning smoke from the huge King Fire (west of Tahoe). Earlier in the summer, smoke from the huge fires in far northern CA occasionally made its way down to the Bay Area under certain types of winds.

I've had luck with checking for heavy smoke and even haze by clicking on the fire box on this weather map:

Edit: the map is displaying smoke data today after not seeming to work yesterday; the Eastside looks great from Tower Peak south, but much of northern and central CA and Nevada looks to be suffering.

Yes, it is quite smokey in Bishop today. Temps about 93 with not much of a breeze; if you have asthma - stay south! Haven't been able to see the Sierra or the Whites today due to the smokey haze.

It's starting to clear up. We couldn't even see the sides of the valley here in Deep Springs this morning, but now I can finally see the silhouette of the Palisades, and it's basically clear to the east. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Nice and clear this morning, and I can see the Palisades looking quite crisp, so I imagine the Owens is clear too. It looks good on the webcams.

It was extremely smoky yesterday morning (Friday, 19), here in Mammoth.
Today is absolutely gorgeous,...no smoke at all,...the perfect late summer day.

Confirmed in Lone Pine, too. Awesome cloud formations. Headed over Baxter tomorrow...

I was up near Bass Lake all weekend and it actually rained (gasp!) last night for about 30 minutes. Any rain on the east side? Thursday/Friday were like being in a saloon though... uggg...
