Southern California Snow!

by goldenhopper » Sun Jan 02, 2011 11:11 pm

Snowing at my place in Santa Clarita at 1600ft and it just started to sticking! Interstate 5 is closed through the Grapevine and I'm sure there are more of you out there getting the white stuff?

Hey, I grew up in Canyon Country, back when it was a nice place to live! I remember a couple of times that it snowed a foot deep and school was closed for the day. Fun stuff.

Hope you get at least a couple of inches so you can throw snowballs and make snowmen!

Drove through a bit of a flurry in Yucca on our way home from Turtle Mtns tonight. Very cool to see snow at such low elevation!

One of my employees is not coming in today because he was coming down from Grass Valley and heard that Tejon Pass was closed; so he headed over to Cajon Pass and found that it was closed; so he headed back to the 101 and came down via Malibu.

These are the End Times. No joke.

I'm heading to that general area in a few days, trying a few peaks west of Needles, probably nothing higher than 5,000 feet. What were conditions like? Mainly, how muddy and gooey were the roads?

How was the Turtles? What did you do?

We camped at Mopah Springs trailhead for our seige on Kettle BM (3460'). Below freezing temps Friday nite. Saturday was mid-40's with some sun and a breeze. Saturday nite was just above freezing. We packed and headed for another dirt road to approach Negro Peak (2520'). Clouds and wind moved in and totally comfy in 2 layers. No issues with washed out roads, perfect packed driving terrain. Could feel the bad weather approaching as we returned to our truck. Driving through Yucca we met with flurries. Very neat trip! I'll bet they got snowed on last night though.

Eight hours (including an hour for dinner) from Vincent Gap to Huntington Beach via the 2, 138, 15, 91. All but an hour and a half was spent on the 2 and 138. Lot's of fun on the hill with the kids though.

I went through that area in the early evening yesterday too - really nice driving through the snow on 62, but no fun in the traffic once I hit the 10. It was just perfect weather this past weekend in the Old Woman and Chemehuevi Mountains spending time with the Cat's Claw and Cholla.

I heard about this fiasco from someone that went boarding at Mt High. Thank God I wasn't there; I don't deal with traffic very well

We took 16 1/2 hours getting back from Tahoe Sunday. I-5 closed over Tejon Pass, SR58 and SR14 both complete zoos. Blew a tire, broke a rear shock, almost blew another tire. Escaped some of the madness by heading over Greenhorn summit on 155 to Walker Pass (SR 178 was closed due to mudslides going into Lake Isabella), then Bouquet Canyon Road around the fiasco that was SR 14. Too many stuck vehicles to count, including several SUVs and one Hummer (how is that possible???). I was never so glad to get home. In that amount of time we could have driven to Aspen...

Exactly Kathy! Did you stay nice and warm out there? Somehow my thermal bottoms became full of plant material - I scratched my ass all the way up and down Negro Peak. AAARRRG!
