Typically in early season you don't yet have a good base. You need some 2-3 feet of snow followed by some consolidation, then more snow on top of that. We used to do our first tour at Donner Summit, which gets the most and highest snow. It is a standard marked tour into Grubb Hut, going over Castle Pass. Only about 3 miles one way, with about 1,000 gain going in. A road bed to follow. If there is plenty of snow, you can bag Basin or Castle. Gorgeous snow on trees. On the south side of the pass is the Mt. Judah area, but parking is bad. Then they have the SugarBowl runs which take up where we used to ski.
Tallac has slide paths and is pretty steep. Rubicon is gentler, and makes for as nice a view of the Lake. More in the NS Peaks Guide!
