Trying to learn!

by eric.fides » Thu Sep 19, 2013 5:47 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm a new climber who is eager to learn mountaineering!
I have about 2 years of experience backpacking and I can comfortably climb a 5.10b (but no experience on any walls outdoors)

I'd like to start bagging some peaks and I am most likely signing up for a class to climb Shasta in June.

Would anyone be willing to let me go on a trip with them to learn? I have most of my own gear and can rent whatever I might not have. Looking for anyone to take me under their wings! :D

No offense, but 10b on an indoor wall translates to 5.8 outdoors. Sequences and holds are much easier to recognize indoors. Plus, the biggest things gym climbers don't understand is that many of your footholds in gyms are sticking out from the rock, whereas many on outdoor crags are actually inset. This makes the stability and feel of the hold quite different. Again, not disparaging you at all, just helping you with your expectation of what you'll be climbing. You didn't mention where you're from, and it doesn't say on your profile. I assume CA? I also assume you're in the 18-23yr old age group?

Yup your correct. Did not take it that way at all.
I really just posted on this site to gain valuable insight from those who are experienced and maybe remember how they first started.

Looking to get better at indoor climbing (just completed my 2nd month at the gym) but take that first step in climbing peaks over 10k ft.
