Wow! Good find! I know and have climbed with a number of the people quoted at length in the article. Regarding his expeditions, I was invited on a few, and the invitation would go like this, via a phone call at works: "E.B., Fred needs one more climber for an expedition he is organizing to (insert some far flung mountain range here). We leave in two weeks and expect to be gone for six. Are you in?". Needless to say with a career and family, I never managed to join, and I expect that I have missed all my opportunities.

A good friend and climbing partner took some time off from his law career to slum as a real estate agent and sold Fred his current house. He had some very funny stories, including while viewing one house Fred decided he needed to urinate and did so right in the back yard.

Have just read the article :P
I wonder how many times in life we say NO to a challenge. I mean of course I'd do the same if I were you, but I know quite a few climbers who'd go for it regardles wifes and jobs  Don't mean anything bad, just thinking aloud. When I say NO to something: no money, not now, can't do it, I don't know why but I remember this absolutely positive movie with Jim Carrey "Yes Man" :D Helps sometimes to take the right desigion.
