Week hike in Adirondacks

by Basham » Fri Sep 16, 2016 3:55 pm

I'm thinking of doing this in late March/early April. Anybody willing to do this with me?

In an average snow year, the Adirondack high peaks are not snow free until close to Memorial Day weekend. A couple of years ago, we got 2 ft+ of new snow at highest elevations on Memorial Day weekend!

I know. I love extreme weather. Went for a hike during an all-out blizzard once.

I think I'm going to do this in May.

Go earlier in May before the black flies come out. Stay lower and out of the high peaks to avoid the remaining snow. The Northville-Lake Placid trail would be a decent option but be prepared to skirt winter blowdown (likely would not yet be cleared) and wade some high streams due to runoff.

I'd like to do some cold-weather camping. Not Denali cold, but sub-freezing. Mid 20's.
