I agree, specifically I remember a large valley between Arequippa and Colca Canyon in southern Peru that is very similar to some places in the White Mtns. Also many places in Bolivia's Altiplano fit the bill too. Similar elevations too.

Interesting idea.

I've been trying to think of other places in the continental US that might have similar landscapes. The criteria would be something like: above treeline, low rainfall, broad valleys or plateaus surrounded by higher mountains.

How about Mosquito Pass (13,185 ft) in the Colorado Rockies? There are probably others.

I've got no idea if it fits the bill, but those photos reminded me of heading east on highway 50 through Nevada. Would you consider that the same area? Guess so..

Taken from my car window at 80mph but I think it will work..
